Hellenic Police Boost Protection In Response to Protests Against Israeli Passenger Liner

Greek authorities have dramatically enhanced safety arrangements at two major ports in an effort to prevent demonstrators from approaching a passenger ship carrying visitors from Israel on an eleven-day Mediterranean journey.

Recent Protests Prompt Increased Security

The security reinforcement at the Peloponnesian ports followed previous protests when the MS Crown Iris made port in Kalamata recently. Earlier, travelers aboard the same vessel were prevented from disembarking and the vessel had to reroute to Cyprus after community members staged a protest on the Cycladic island of Syros.

"In spite of the ceasefire, Israel is still continuing its military operations in Gaza," remarked a schoolteacher who took part in the Kalamata demonstration. "Innocent, unarmed people are being slain."

Tourist Encounter and Popular Opinion

From higher vantage points, tourists watched as crowds in Kalamata yelled: "You need the authorities, you're not welcome in Greece."

A leading campaigner, who worked throughout summer arranging anti-war protests throughout Greece, declared: "Israeli visitors who endorse the decisions of their government aren't embraced here."

Geopolitical Context and Foreign Ties

Constantine Filis clarified: "Owing to regional nearness and our traditional ties with the Arab world, the average Greek is more attuned to what is transpiring in Gaza than the average central or north European."

"The Hellenic Republic is in a complex circumstance," he continued. "Israel is considerably more vital for us as an ally than it is for the majority of European countries."

Commercial and Travel Consequences

National figures indicate that in excess of 600,000 Israeli visitors came to Greece in 2024, with forecasts of even higher numbers this year. This substantial influx emphasizes the significantly enhanced ties between the two nations since the 1980s, when Greek governments maintained a firmly pro-Palestinian policy.

Tactical Alliance and Regional Considerations

For the Greek government, Israel constitutes not only a significant counterbalance to geopolitical adversary Turkey but also grants the supplementary bonus of better official channels to Washington.

"The Hellenic Republic is not going to jeopardize its relations with Israel," stated Filis. "But from a ethical standpoint we must be more inclusive, more measured, more resolved to demonstrate the misdeeds of Israel in Gaza."

Expanding Protest Movement and Global Response

The scale of the Greek protest movement has caught Israel off guard. Recently, the country's foreign ministry warned tourists to maintain a low profile, while domestic press referred to Athens as a "former paradise" due to political graffiti appearing on buildings in the urban center.

Victor Eliezer of the Hebrew Communities Council in Greece expressed concern: "Naturally we're worried. The kind of discourse we're experiencing can so easily become antisemitic."

Future Developments and Requests

Increasingly, opponents have targeted Athens' strong connections with Israel. Up to 5,000 people recently journeyed to Crete to request the termination of the Souda Bay military facility, a NATO base that following the start of war in Gaza has operated as a crucial replenishment point for US aircraft carriers, military jets and boats destined for Israel.

"We have achieved successes," declared an anti-racist coordinator. "Our central requirement, currently, is to stop any collaboration with Israel."
