Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
